A rant and some questions about my OBs second trimester ultrasound policy

Em

I'm a FTM and I'm currently 18 weeks. I've started to feel my little one moving around a LOT lately and it's been a huge relief! I'm technically a high risk pregnancy despite everything going spectacularly so far (aside from hyperemesis gravardium.)

I selected my OB based on her stellar reviews and a heartfelt endorsement from one of my other doctors who happens to be pregnant right now too. (My doctor actually uses this same OB and loves her. After seeing that her reviews were all positive and liking her when we met, I figured I was good to go!) At my booking-in appointment I was informed that they charge $150 for their "optional" "second trimester gender reveal ultrasound." To be clear, this is charged outside of what is billed to insurance. It's treated as a little side-perk that's purely outside of medically necessary diagnostic testing. I had NIPT done and already know that I'm having a girl! So, the gender reveal isn't what I'm after. I just feel like the second trimester anatomy scan seems really important! At my last appointment I tried to get some more clarification about whether or not I can expect to receive an anatomy scan at some point. The nurse asked me if I wanted to process a payment ahead of time for the scan. 😳 I told her that I'm not interested in the gender and am just asking if they plan to check on how my daughter is doing in there anytime during my second trimester. She shrugged and said that the ultrasound "is optional."

Have you guys ever heard of this before?! I'm really confused and I plan to talk to my OB directly tomorrow for some clarification. I'm hoping that I'm just misunderstanding what I've been told! I know that my MFM will definitely check in visually via an ultrasound at some point, but I won't go see her until I'm nearly 30 weeks!! I'm hopelessly confused and looking for a little reassurance before my appointment. If it helps, this office is a highly respected practice that's associated with a major hospital and I'm in the USA.
