Chances of 2nd membrane sweep failing?

Had a membrane sweep at 37+5 but failed. Lost mucus plug a week later. Had another membrane sweep at 39w (yesterday). The difference this time was that it was extremely more painful and left me in aching pain for 24hrs. I woke up this morning to more of my mucus plug. Is this a sign it’s working? I’m so miserable having to deal with this lower back pain and cramps. I’m really hoping I didn’t go through all that pain for nothing.
