IUI or IVF experiences?

My husband and I are going to see a specialist in June and I'm just curious how the process works with the first visit and subsequent visits after. I know it's different with every person and every situation but I was just curious on everyone's experiences. (I just got pregnant for the first time in November but unfortunately it turned out to be ectopic) I was officially diagnosed with PCOS in April.

My case is a little unique. My OBGYN started my fertility treatments via Clomid and Femara. I was unresponsive so I opted for surgery. I had my ovaries drilled, HSG, D&C, Endometriosis diagnosed and excised, and an impromptu appendectomy. So when I went to my RE, my testing was sent over and accepted as it was close in time to when I started seeing her. 
My initial consult, she suggested more Letrozole and TI cycles. I'd already done a few timed intercourse cycles (with Letrozole) prior to seeing her post surgery to no avail so I asked for IUI. She was resistant as IUI doesn't actually hold a much higher chance that a timed intercourse cycle does. She thinks they are a waste but I wanted to try. We came up with a 6 cycle game plan. If no pregnancy, we would reevaluate. In that consult I got orders for more blood work, my husband had another semen analysis, and we were offered genetic blood testing. Luckily I was mid cycle and everything came back fine so we started with IUI about 2 weeks later. I did 4 cycles (one converted to TI as we were out of town) with no luck so we decided to move forward with IVF. 
In my honest opinion, if you have the financial footing and time management for IVF, I'd skip straight to that. I'm not saying IUI does not work, but IVF has higher success rates in comparison.
