Slow cooker lid wasn’t on?

Kait

I left homemade chili in my crockpot to simmer for several hours this afternoon. It was fully cooked before I left. I left for 2 1/2 hours and I came back to discover that the lid was not entirely on, and the food was not as hot as I would have expected it to be. After doing some online searching I checked the temperature with a meat thermometer and the middle seemed to be barely above 140° (F) while the outsides were well over 160. Do you think that this is safe to eat or does it need to be tossed? I just had a stomach bug a couple of months ago so I’m definitely more paranoid and I would be serving it to my 11-month-old and my in-laws.
