Your Athame?

-- I got an athame for my dedication ceremony this past Imbolc, and I realize I can't do any actual magickal workings with it yet (I'm still in my year and a day), but I'd still like to use it somehow.

-- It's just been sitting in my cupboard all this time with my other would-be alter type things. It's fully blessed and consecrated and it just seems like a waste not to use it somehow. I've always loved blades (my next athame will be a one handed sword <3), but this one isn't sharp. It's got a blunted edge.

-- So what do you all use your athames for when you're not doing rituals and the like? I heard someone used it as a regular knife for making things in the kitchen - would it be beneficial to get it sharpened for this purpose??

An athame, or boline?

An athame is a consecrated magickal tool that should never be used for cutting anything on the physical plane. It is meant for spiritual/energy working only. If it ever draws blood, it should be destroyed.

A boline, on the other hand, could be consecrated or not, and is your physical realm "working" blade. It can cut, chop, slice, and all the things you might need it for.

The athame is an extension of your will, and is a tool of great respect. When not in use, it should be sheathed and kept on/in your altar, or other similarly safe and secured area.

Are you a solitary, or working with a coven?

I have a few now, love collecting them :-) I do sometimes just have mine placed on the alter if I feels it's helpful to any spell I may be working on as a symbol rather than practical use.

I personally wouldn't use any of mine for regular kitchen use, once consecrated and blessed I like to keep things purely for magical use so they'd only be used on herbs etc.
