Breastmilk volume/nutrients not enough! Seeking advice!

Heather

Hey ladies,

So baby was born January 25th, right away he had a pretty good latch, a little aggressive maybe but good latch. I gave feeding him about every 2 - 3 hours a go until the early hours of the morning on the 26th. He wouldn’t settle for hours, kept showing feeding cues and wanting to be on the boob but would get frustrated after a few minutes and unlatch. Needless to say my breasts were overworked and bruised. I asked for a bottle of formula because I didn’t know what else to try and he was showing all signs of being hungry. At this point he was having both wet and poopy diapers after just being breastfed.

After he took some of the first bottle of formula I think maybe about 5 ml he was content and slept peacefully for the next couple hours. When he woke again, I fed him formula again at the agreement with my nurse because my breasts were too sore to nurse. At the next feeding, I offered both breasts first, he nursed for 15 mins each side but remained fussy until I supplemented with formula.

Had to do a glucose screening which came back low after he fed and they made me formula feed for the rest of the afternoon to get his levels back up. We’re home now, the plan was to supplement with formula while either breastfeeding (once healed) or pumping and then bottle feeding.

First feed post discharge, hubby fed baby formula while I pumped for 15 on each breast. I maybe got a teaspoon of liquid out of both. At second feeding, again hubby bottle fed while I pumped and I got nothing after 15 mins of pumping. The time between feedings was roughly 3 hours. Baby is only eating an ounce each feeding.

At night feedings last night I didn’t pump and bottle fed exclusively because my nipples were starting to bleed and were very sore.

It was very disheartening to get nothing at that second feeding home, and I feel completely discouraged. Is any of this normal? Am I doing something wrong? What else could I try?

Please any advice would be much appreciated, I really wanted to breastfeed and I feel like I’m failing baby completely.
