Is diabetes hereditary?

My grandpa from my dads side has diabetes, his daughter (my aunt) has diabetes, and my dad also just got diagnosed with diabetes.....
I’m scared that I’ll also get diabetes....what are the chances that I will end up getting it? Is there anything I can do to prevent that?

Diabetes is both genetic and environmental. Type 2 diabetes can be prevented and/or controlled be eating healthy and exercising. My husband’s father has type 2 and my husband and brother are both pre-diabetic. My husband became vegan to prevent it and keep it at bay.

The predisposition for Diabetes is hereditary. Type 1 is always developed from genetic predisposition, there’s nothing you can do to prevent developing this type of it’s going to happen. 
Type 2, you have more odds of developing this if your family has it but it is very preventable with a healthy lifestyle, particularly a healthy diet. 
My grandfather was diabetic type 2 and so is my cat. Yes, animals get diabetes and in cats it’s always type 2. And I’ve had peers in school and work throughout life that have one or the other. It can’t be cured but it is very treatable and we understand it much better than a decade or two ago when my grandfather was living. 
You should learn more about it, it’s less scary if you understand it and the better we understand medical conditions the better we can identify them and start treatment early so it will have minimum impact on your life.

The risk is higher but it isnt a for sure thing. My SIL's parent are first cousins and both diabetic, she and one of her sisters are diabetic too but the others arent. I have two friends with type 1 and none of their kids are. Dont spend your life worried🤷🏽‍♀️
