How much does popularity influence your name choice?

With my daughter I was very conscious of how popular certain names were - I really didn’t want anything in the top 10. We wound up choosing a name we love that SEEMS super uncommon/strange in my area but fell somewhere around #30. We’ve ran into one or two other kids with her name, but that’s it. 
Now, we are having a baby boy and the ONLY name I like (a name I have loved since I was a teenager) is literally the second most popular name. I can’t decide if this is a deal breaker or not! I I haven’t run into many boys with this name yet (one or two tops) and I’ve read it might be on the decline, but still, I don’t know if I want him to have to be one of 10 kids in his class with that name.

I won't use a name in the top 25. My daughter's name was #303 last I checked, so I'm not worried about her running into multiple Miriam's her age. 
I love the name Ava, but I couldn't give my daughter that name because it's been really popular for like 10 years now. I didn't want her to have to go by Ava E. for the rest of her life lol

I’m the same way. If it’s top 10, it’s automatically off my list.

It matters a lot to me personally because our last name is Smith, so I don’t want to run the risk of having another kid with the same first AND last name 🥴
But, names are hard to agree on and fall in love with, so if you both love a name in the top 10 and have a less common last name, I say go for it! You can also get a little wild with the middle name. 😏

Very much so. To the point where I have avoided mentioning my son's name on the internet much at all (ESPECIALLY in baby name forums like this one) just to preserve its rarity. If the popularity is in the top thousand it's out for me. I don't mind a couple other people having it but the idea of my kid having literally thousands or millions of other people with the same name is a big 👎. Feels (to ME) like I didn't put enough effort into choosing a name that is special to them.

My name is Emma and I know how annoying it is to have an extremely common name and I wouldn’t want to do that to my child. I’ve always wanted to name my first born son Greyson but it’s been really getting popular lately so I took that off my list. 😬🤷🏻‍♀️ I have been trying to look for another name for my little boy and I’m extremely picky so it’s been difficult.

My husband and I agreed that it is much more important that we love the name than how popular it is. Our child will be an individual no matter what he is named.

Luckily neither of our girls names were in the top 50 for the years they were born. However, we can’t decide on a boy name and the two we actually agreed on as possibilities are BOTH in the top 10. 🤦🏼‍♀️ It is what it is though.

My sons name was somewhere in the 300s so not popular at all and I prefer it that way. Most of the names in the top 100 I had heard a thousand times and didn’t like very well.
