What would you think if an interviewer said this?

Question

I had an interview today and at the end they were asking me when I could start, how much notice I needed to give my job, if I could give my notice sooner. And then they said “you did really good we will get back to you”. Does that sound like they don’t want to hurt my feelings and know I’m not the right fit or do they actually think that?

I ask all of those questions when I interview, but I don’t ever tell someone if they did good or bad. I always just say “someone will reach out to you either way”. I don’t make a decision until I’ve interviewed all candidates so I don’t want to get someone’s hopes up if I go another direction. Our recruiting dept will reach out though and let them know the final decision

When I was a GM at my last job,thats how I would end interviews with people I was going to hire. In my experience, Ive always been told "I'll need to speak to my boss/comanager/ other important figure and will get back to you" if they werent interested.

It sounds like you did good. Usually if they don’t like you they just will say “we’ll get back to you” and don’t.
