Why OB?

I'm just kinda curious why in America everyone seems to see a doctor instead of a midwife. Is it an insurance thing? Is that just what's available? Or is it that childbirth/pregnancy are viewed as something more medical rather than natural? Even when my son had an issue with his lung I was still seen by a midwife for the most part (monthly appointments with a specialist doctor to keep track of his lung development, but otherwise all midwife). I just find it so weird as I can't imagine seeing a doctor for a straightforward pregnancy because it's not a condition that needs treatment, just monitoring. I'm also on the path to becoming a midwife myself so I figured it might give me some insight into how other countries handle it.

Out of preference 🤷🏻‍♀️ i dont agree with a lot of things about midwives and the way they handle certain situations with labor and delivery. No hate I just feel safer with my OB. So far have delivered 3 babies naturally with him and no complications or complaints here. He’s very thorough and always makes me feel important as a patient.

You can choose to see either. Some women see midwives and some OBGYNs, it’s just preference and what your insurance will cover.

It’s personal choice. In my experience an OB is WAY more educated and can answer our questions so much better.

I saw an obgyn for my yearly female checkups before pregnancy, so it was just natural that I continued to see the same person during my pregnancy.

I feel OBs are more knowledgeable especially when it comes to complications. Almost all my pregnancies were high risk. I rather see an OB than a midwife because of that. We have a couple of midwives at my OB’s office but I did not like seeing them. I felt they didn’t quite know all the in and outs of my medical questions or had much input about my past complications.

I’m in the US and I’ve been seeing a team of midwives for all of my pregnancies. I think it’s all personal preference and depends on the hospital and insurances. My team of midwives are qualified for just about everything except c-sections - I believe.

I'm in the US. Midwives arent much of a thing in my area. Insurances (the three I've had) doesn't cover the cost of midwives and they will not see you as a patient without insurance. Again, this is all things I've ran into. There is 1 midwife within 90 miles of me. She also does not have any privileges at either of the hospital in my area. This may not apply for all areas but this is what I've ran into.

I am in US Texas to be exact and I love my Midwive’s! They deliver in hospital setting and allow as much or as little intervention as medically allows. They are trained and equipped to handle any situation such as breech delivery, hemorrhage, pre-ecplamsia. Etc. only thing they can not perform is c-section. They allow us to do a water birth in hospital with the choice of IV meds, gas/air, or even epidural(which requires bed delivery). I love all my options for in the moment. Hoping to a natural water birth but going in with open mind.

I don’t think midwives are a huge thing in my city.  Like I’d have to specifically search out one for my pregnancy that was also covered by my insurance. I looked into a birthing center for my first and I think I only found one center that was within 30 minutes and my city is a major city.  I was surprised that my hospital had one (maybe more) on staff. A midwife is the person who triaged me in L&D and admitted me to the hospital, but after that decision, I a was a taken care of by nurses until it was time to push.  And even then, I was mostly with the nurses.

I went with a team of midwives instead of an OB, my insurance allowed either option. I preferred the more natural approach typically offered by midwives.
