Traveling with a toddler

We will be going on a cruise in a few months and will have a bus ride to and from the airport to the port. We have an 18 month old and I am wondering if people just sit their children on their laps during the bus ride? What a taxi or an Uber? I doubt we will need to take either of those but just curious how people have handled these situations. We haven’t traveled with him before. Any tips or tricks you have for traveling with a toddler would also be greatly appreciated.
