I guess I don't understand naming him something that won't actually be his first name.

My grandparents did this to my dad.  He HATES it.  It makes legal paperwork and other things so much of a hassle.  It's always an issue.  Make Matthew the middle name and make the kid's name you're going to call him actually his legal name.
