Correct or totally wrong?

Question

My parents have always made the statement "you will never be our equal. You are our child so we will always be above you." They make this statement any time I or my siblings disagree with them (on an issue) or don't stand for them making snarky or judgemental comments about us. It's often paired with a claim that we are being disrespectful by disagreeing or sticking up for ourselves.
Mind you, none of us are children. I'm in my mid-30's with 3 children of my own, one of which is a teen. I do not view my children this way so it leaves me to wonder.
Is this the actual belief of others? Do other parents actually view their children as being beneath them?

No one is above someone else, in my opinion. My mother is not superior to me, just like I will not be superior to my children. It’s perfectly acceptable to disagree with your parents, and doing so is not a matter of disrespect.

I wasn't my Mother's equal until I became an adult. I was taught to shut up and was often dismissed when I had feelings on concerns.
I think it's wrong to still have that point of view NOW seeing as you are a grown woman.

Totally wrong. That mindset would make me not want to be around them much. The way I see it is that I am teaching and guiding my child for now, but most of our lives will be spent as friends. My child’s childhood is only 18 years, and she has several more years beyond those first 18. My “being in charge” years are few and set the tone for whether or not she’ll be close with me for the rest of our years following.

I think maybe her wording was wrong... I get where she's coming from because regardless you are still her child, but you should be treated equally as an adult.

Definitely wrong. I do not won my children, I am bot better than them or above them. I definitely do not treat them like I am and never will. Yes I am their mother and I make rules to keep them safe and healthy but they are their own people and I do my beast to build them up so they can feel confident and strong as indaviduals.

My daughter is NOT my equal but I wouldn't describe her as being beneath me. Once my daughter is an adult I'll see her more as an equal and as a fellow adult but as of now, no. She's 3.
