Is deli meat ok?

Question

Long before I finally got pregnant I heard pregnant women shouldn’t eat deli meat due to nitrates. How serious is this? I ask because the bacon turkey bravo from Panera is the only thing that doesn’t make me hate food when I think of it and I’ve had pretty bad food aversion.

Dr told me that’s old. I always ate deli meat COLD because I hate it warm. Dr told me it’s fine. If you’re worried then warm it up I guess but it’s not a must. I had subway and jimmy johns ALL the time with both my kids

You can eat it as long as you heat it up to kill bacteria. The nitrates aren't great for you but as long as you're not eating it at every meal you're fine.

You’re correct that you should avoid nitrates/nitrites. Fortunately most lunch meat does not have them added any longer. Pork products often do though- hot dogs, sausage, bacon, etc. You’re safe with turkey, chicken and roast beef lunch meat. My OB recommends avoiding purchasing from the deli and instead buying prepackaged lunch meat because there’s less contamination possible. The slicers don’t get cleaned in between different meats getting cut behind the deli counter and often if it’s busy, the meats don’t get wrapped up and put back in the cold case as soon as they should.

I think mostly it was for roast beef deli meat. If too worried then I would heat up the luncheon meat.
