9 week missed miscarriage - d & c or pill?

Question

Had an appointment last Friday and found out at my ultrasound that there is no baby. My OB scheduled an appointment for tomorrow to discuss my options. I really don’t want to wait until it naturally passes. Can any one tell me about the d&c or the pill and what they would choose? I’m leaning towards the pill, but I’ve heard that it can be painful and traumatic. Is that still true with a blighted ovum miscarriage?

Hey everyone, my doctor recommended the pills because of the empty sac. I took them once I got home, within 3 hours I started bleeding. There was a lot of bleeding and clotting, but the cramping was the worst part. I was in bed most of the day with hot packs because I had pain in my abdomen and back and it radiated down my legs. This morning I feel a million times better. Thanks to everyone for sharing their stories and recommendations with me.

I’m sorry you have to go through this. 
I had originally planned for d&c, but with the coronavirus it wasn’t an option unless the pills didn’t work. My sac measured as six weeks, so the doc said it’ll be like a heavy period naturally or with pills. 
I took misoprostol two days ago. I started early in the AM, hoping to pass the sac during the day. Cramps started about 2-3 hours after taking the pills. Bleeding started about 3 hours after that. I continued to cramp until after I passed what appeared to be the sac in the PM (about 11 hours after the pills). The bleeding is now medium flow and no cramps (knock on wood). I just hope all the tissue is gone. 🤞🏼

For an empty sac, the pills shouldn’t be too traumatic. I used them on my blighted ovum and everything went fine. I had one rough day of bleeding and cramping but once the sac was out I had light bleeding for 5 days or so. No issues. Glad I could be in the comfort of my own home. Sorry for your loss.

I had a missed miscarriage and decided to have a D&C. It wasn’t too bad at all (physically) and I just wanted the whole thing to be over. My period also came back relatively quickly too.

I had a missed miscarriage at 9 weeks and took the pills. I chose to start them at night so my 18 month old (at the time) would hopefully sleep through it. It was a very rough night with barely any sleep but the worst of it was over in 8 hours.  An overwhelming amount of blood and I was sick to my stomach and vomiting for most of it. However, by morning it had slowed slightly and continued to slow throughout the day. I had bleeding like a regular period afterwards for about 5 days.

I had a mmc at 11 weeks. I was in denial so I waited for it to pass naturally, which never happened. So I got my prescription for the pill, I took it and within an hour I was bleeding like crazy. One thing I wasn’t warned of is the diarrhea. I was on the toilet for most of the day due to it. So if you do take the pill he prepared for that. The pill didn’t work for me so I wound up with a d&c anyway. 
My recommendation is to just go with the d&c, that way it’s one and done. It was very  traumatic going through all that. But ultimately it’s up to you. I wish you the best of luck!

I say do the pill first and if it doesn’t work then get a D&C
D&C have a lot of risk involved with them. I had to have one because I lost at 12 weeks but not all the tissue came out.

I had a D&C. My only issue was my surgeon wanted to avoid scaring and permanent damage (cuz it can happen) so he did not remove everything and I bled for another 11 days. Of course he thought he had and it was a risk when I was prepped for surgery. It’s really rare, but it can happen. I had softball sized clots and my husband took me to the ER when I fainted in our kitchen. Luckily by the time we got to the ER everything had passed but for me it was like I naturally passed the baby and had surgery. So super traumatic for me.

I had 2 natural ones. The first one passed quickly (like while I was waiting for the results from my ultrasound), and the second one felt like it took forever (I bled in a very slow crescendo to a clear climax and then it slowly tapered off again and didn’t completely stop before I got my next period) - it was passing, so they didn’t even offer me the D&C but I think I would’ve loved to do that and just get it over with.

I’m so sorry for your loss. I’ve had a d&c and I’ve had a natural one that still ended in d&c. And I’ve had 2 natural ones. I’d def go for d&c.
