Baby gasps during sleep... her pediatrician called this laryngomalacia... anyone heard of this or been thru it? She does this 5-10 times a night during her sleep. She sometimes wakes her self up. Seems to breath fine but it still scares me :(

My daughter has this most cases solve themselves and they grow out of it in the first year. The simple way of putting it is a flap in the voice box is a little bit too soft and it catches when they breath sometimes causing a terrifying wheezy like noise. I’ve been told by her ent specialist that it shouldn’t cause complications

I don’t want to be one of those moms that scares you but hearing about worst case scenarios is also beneficial so you have a better idea of this condition. My 9 month old had this too only a more severe case. Hers was 24/7 and so loud she sounded like a bulldog breathing in my ear. She actually wasn’t bad at all at birth, it was barely noticeable like the room had to be super quiet and you had to strain to hear it but it got worse by the time she was 2 weeks. It was scary to listen to especially at night. The ent told me to keep an eye on her weight. If it started to plateau or dip then it would be a sign that she was working to hard to breathe and was burning extra calories. Her pediatrician was trying to convince me I didn’t have enough milk and that she had severe reflux preventing her from gaining weight even though she didn’t have severe symptoms (laryngomalacia and minor reflux go hand in hand so Zantac is often prescribed until baby outgrows it). I eventually took her back to the ent after a lot of back and forth with her ped. Her weight had dropped from 20% down to 4%. Her ent said she needed surgery to cut back the flaps ASAP. She had surgery when she was 8 weeks old, an hour long procedure. I was able to nurse her almost immediately after. The difference in sound was so drastic, she was so quiet in comparison. She struggled a little to gain weight for the first couple of weeks but got over that hump and has been doing amazing since. No complications whatsoever. She still has stridor every now and then but nowhere near as bad as she was and it gets less often as she gets older.
