How to build your credit?

I’m 21 and have no credit. What are some things I can do to build it? I’ve tried applying for credit cards and I always get denied.

Try finding a “secured” card. I know Capital One has one. You put a small deposit down, and you get a line of credit. Put something with a recurring charge, like Netflix, on it. Paying it every month should definitely help!

outside of your own credit card, there are other lines of credit to explore. you can be an authorised user on someone else's card, if you're able to find someone to let you. or have your parents pay bills through you, some agencies include it in your credit report. i pay it myself now, but before, my dad would pay for utilities by putting them in my name and just sending me the money to cover it. he does the same with my brother and our mortgage. there's also credit building loans, getting a co-signer (pretty popular option), etc.

Are you a student? I started on Discover’s student card thing while I was at university, it was pretty easy to get!
I still just use Discover so that’s my only suggestion 😔

My first credit cards were Kohls, JCPenny, and Victoria secret. I didn’t have any credit and got a decent amount on each card. The only thing is with those stores you need self control if you’re a shopaholic definitely avoid those cards.

Why are you denied? Do you work right now? If you can provide proof of some income, you should be able to get a card meant for someone starting out. I was hardly making any money while I was in college and got approved for my credit card. My first credit card was linked through my bank and my credit limit was $500, when you pay it off for a while and start making more money you can keep raising that credit limit so that you are not using too much of your credit each month - using your whole credit limit isn't great for your score.

When I was young, I got a secured credit card! You put down a down payment basically and that becomes your credit limit (mine was $300) and then they have insurance you won’t default on your payment. After a certain amount of on-time payments, they’ll give you your down payment back!!
