How do I get my baby to sleep somewhere besides my arms?

Question

She is 3 weeks old and my 3rd baby. I can’t figure out how to get her to stay asleep at night or during the day for any time longer than 1-2 hours without being held. I am breastfeeding and I can tell she likes to just be by my boob to sleep, but I’m not sleeping and I have a 5.5 and almost 4 yr old to take care!

Try placing a well worn t-shirt in the cot so baby can still smell you when you put them down.

So with my son, after we give him his bath,  I would give him a 4oz of breast milk with a bottle then let him either suck on my boob or his pacifier until he falls asleep. He usually falls asleep within 30 mins and for at least 6 hours...once in a blue moon I would get 8 or 9. I also swaddle him in a swaddle sack with his arms out (he's almost 4 months but start since he was 1 month)...he moves a lot at night and that seems to help him soothe himself back to sleep.

My baby tends to sleep for longer stretches when he’s swaddled. We use the SwaddleMe swaddles, which are easier to get nice and tight around his arms than a swaddle blanket.

I’m a first time mum so by no means the expert. My premie baby when we got home would only settle on me or dad and both of us were not sleeping and very tired and full of guilt as you leave a hospital with all those leaflets and talks that babies should sleep in empty cot and flat on their back and no blankets and not with you because it’s dangerous. So we finally got to a stage that we needed a solution and some sleep. We decided to get one of those Purflo Nest and put it between us (we do have massive bed). I would cover the nest in my night dress from the day before for my smell and settle here there with our duvet on her legs. Mind she only sleeps on her side. If on a back she never sleeps longer than 2 hours. She is now 12 weeks and we all sleep regularly from 10pm till 5am.

Do you ever swaddle baby? It helps my baby a little. This is also my 3rd and she's definitely been tricky she gets pretty fussy regardless of what we try sometimes even holding her I'm glad shes my 3rd and not my first cuz i feel like it would stress me a lot worse
