Any other toddlers, not into crafts?

Question

I don’t know what to do. I try to get my girl to use colors, paints, chalk, markers, and she just doesn’t get it, she just wants to eat everything. How are you parents getting them into stuff without them wanting to just eat it. I get frustrated and give up. Help!

Mine likes to just hoard the craft items lol like if we're doing markers, he just holds them all and won't use them 😂

I don't even bother. Going to try in 6 months. They are not really developmentally ready

I think they're still a little young for arts and crafts. Often art for kids ends up being our idea of what they should do with the supplies. My son is more interested in practicing taking off and putting back on the pen caps right now, lol.

I demonstrate first and then give him a turn to show him what to do. The first few times he did try to put paint in his mouth but that’s completely normal- it’s a new material and that’s how they explore/get to know things. I just gently removed his hands from his mouth and said “not for eating” and continues to demonstrate. He started off preferring sponges and his hands over paintbrushes but now he likes paintbrushes too. Early on I also let him paint with washable paint in the bath so it wasn’t a constant battle to get him to paint in a specific space (the page) and him get turned off by having all of these ‘rules’ he had to follow by keeping to the page, not painting the surfaces around him, etc. making it a frustrating experience rather than an enjoyable one. Now he understands what to do though it’s a lot easier to paint on a page!
