Living situation
Hi! i’m here because I really need an outsiders opinion...
About a month ago, my bf and I had to move out urgently from our place as our drunk, live-in landlord was threatening us and we were scared.
We asked my bf’s brother and a friend (they live together) if we could stay at their place for a week until we found a new place and they said ok.
A little back story: the friend is disabled and he was homeless for a year and stayed at my bf’s and his brother’s house for that time, many times he stayed at my bf’s room.
However, the coronavirus “exploded” (we are from Europe) and the whole country was locked down within the week we planned on moving out so we have to stay here... it’s literally illegal to go out unless for food/medical reasons
So a week after this happened, his brother asked us to pay a rent of $900 per month - we had no other choice so we said yes but consider this:
1- we are trapped and it feels like he is taking advantage of our situation
2- they don’t pay rent here - it’s a social house all covered by the government
3- he told us that our disabled friend is charging him $900 so we should pay it - which means his brother wouldn’t be paying anything and we don’t know if the friend is truly charging as he says
4- we have been asked to buy food for the four of us... also we are the ones cooking and cleaning everyday
My bf is working from home but I’ve been laid off from work due to the situation... what are your thoughts? Should we ask our friend about the rent? Should we have a conversation about this?
