How many who grew up with separated parents and a dad who was an alcoholic/druggie carried dads last name and hated it?
I know this is random but I’m curious. I have friends who are single moms and regret giving their children their fathers last names who are now relatively uninvolved. And have had family friends I grew up with who were thankful to not have their dads last name. I gave both my boys my (moms) last name, my firsts dad had taken advantage of me and so will never be involved, my youngests is trying to be involved but I’m not sure how long it will last, he was uninvolved in the pregnancy, barely involved after, and his interest peaked only when child support came into play. Our mediator recommended hyphenating his name when my reasonings for not giving him his dads last name were for him to have the same last name as his brother and his family he spends most his time with and who has supported him throughout, taking him to dr/school with his brother, and that the only two other people with his dads last name are his dad and his grandfather who are both major alcoholics and his grandfather lives states over so will barely see him.
