Picking newborn up

So my baby is almost 6 weeks old and from the time he's been delivered til now I respond to him as soon as he starts crying even when he fusses. I just feel bad hearing him cry I hold him alot as well. My husband is the opposite when responding to him but he's doing an awesome job! Is this odd that I'm super worried about always being attentive to him...

My MIL says I'm going to spoil him and it's good to let him cry for a bit but it hurts my heart hearing him cry. Can I really spoil him by doing this? He's my first.
