If your child’s grandparent is a drug addict and hasn’t been clean for more than a few weeks at a time, would you allow this person to be around your child? Or would you demand they be clean for long periods of time? If so, how long is fair and how would you get proof they are clean?

The only reason my father is going to be allowed around my child is because hes been clean for 4 years now and shows no signs of relapsing. Hes had a stable job all 4 years now, has been going around family again, staying away from old triggers and unnecessary people.

I’d never allow someone who isn’t clean around my children. You can’t force someone to get clean and as long as they are taking drugs or alcohol, they won’t be seeing my children. I’d probably tell them to get some type of help and I’d want to see some consistent changes before I let them see my child, if that takes a year or two, that’s how long it’s going to take before they see their grandchildren. I would start off letting them see my child maybe for an hour every month and gradually increase the time they spend when I can see changes in their life but the moment there is a relapse, they aren’t getting anymore chances to see my children.
