Tips for improving preconception care
So I've been looking for tips on nutrition and care as I'm prepping to ttc (dec) so far I've read some of basics: getting proper nutrients in diet and take prenatals, maintain a healthy weight, make sure you get folic acid (prevents neural tube defects), iron (used to make extra blood that delivers vital oxygen to baby). Clean up lifestyle (don't smoke, drink or do drugs) medical conditions (get a physical prior to see if you are at your optimal health) diabetes, high BP, depression and seizure disorders can affect pregnancy. Do you know what you are putting into your body? Vitamins, herbal supplements, and prescriptions may affect ttc... talk to your dr/pharmacist. (**do not stop taking a prescription before talking to dr) Have you had a pap lately? Is there a chance you may have a STI? And are your vaccinations up to date?
Then I was looking for specific foods: I found on parents.com
1. Eat beans... studies found those who ate plant proteins increased there chances
2. Ice cream... well whole milk products...they protect against ovulatory infertility (skim/low fat do opposite) but don't go over board... it recommends replacing 1 low fat with 1 whole fat a day
3. Leafy greens: improves ovulation (folate) and it's important for men too... makes healthier sperm (I think I'm gonna bump up hubbies folic acid intake for sure! )
4. pumpkin seeds:those who took it in a study were 40% less likely to have trouble ttc
5. Whole wheat bread: complex carbs ( brown rice, pasta, bread) help keep blood sugars (insulin levels) stable
6. Olive oil: monounsaturated fat. Increase insulin sensitivity and decrease inflammation (inflammation interferes with ovulation, conception and early development of the embryo)
7. Wild salmon: great source of omega 3 fatty acid, regulate hormones and increases blood flow to reproductive organs
Avoid high mercury foods (shark, swordfish, king mackerel and tilefish)
Avoid trans fats (baked, processed, fried) it decreases bodies ability to react to insulin which is more prone to irregular ovulation
Please feel free to add any tips that may be helpful or to correct any that may be incorrect...
