Ovulation confusion

Ovulation days are hard to predict with difficult cycles and my period often is light and somewhat only spotting for 2-3 days before an actual blood flow occurs ...so when do u consider the first day to start counting because that could mean a difference for ovulation days big time....I log even spotty days on glow but is that right? Perhaps it's better to just take ovulation tests????
