Another ultrasound at 12 weeks?

Hi mommas! So this is my second pregnancy. I went in at 9 weeks to get a dating ultrasound. I now received a voicemail from a specialist scheduling me for an ultrasound at 12 weeks? Is this normal? Why do I need to see a specialist? I didn’t go through this with my daughter, she had no complications.

Several doctors schedule an ultrasound at 12 weeks to check the NT (area behind the baby’s neck). This is very common where I work, and it’s a routine scan normally.

I had a ultrasound at 8 weeks and another at 12. I’ve had a ton it seems like! But baby girl is perfectly healthy!

I’ve not had that in either of my pregnancies so to me that’s not normal. I guess it probably depends where you are and your doctor though. I don’t believe the nt scan is normally done by a specialist (when done, I don’t know of any doctors that do it or anyone I know who has had it) so that would concern me. I’d just give the office a call and ask them to explain why it needs to be done.

It’s a routine exam done here in Aus at 12 weeks for all pregnant women. Basically it checks for any signs of genetic problems and compares blood test results to some measurements and observations of the scan. Nothing scary and you will be amazed how much your baby has changed since 9 weeks!

It's usually for the genetic screening. Mostly everyone gets it. It's a scan and bloodwork.
