Did you have a yard for your first child from the time they were born? If not, how old were they when you moved somewhere with a yard?

Do you feel like having no yard impacted the quality of their childhood?

I don’t think it impacts childhood as long as you’re still having quality outside time every day that the weather permits. Parks, nature trails, botanical gardens can all be great experiences.

We moved from our condo into a house with a big backyard when our son was 2 months old. He is such an outside kid that I can’t imagine still living in the condo with him. From the moment he wakes up he brings us his socks and shoes and says “out please”. He will spend ours just running around the yard, in and out of the garage, helping us in the garden. We love it. But do I think it’s absolutely essential to a child’s wellbeing? No. You can still take a child on walks, to parks, hiking trails etc if you don’t have a yard.

We have mostly lived somewhere with a yard. It just makes it easier. We were living without one for a bit and went to the park every day. But just being able to open the door and step out is SO much nicer!

Mine’s 3 and we don’t have a yard. I don’t think it’s had any negative impact on his life. He gets tons of outside time at the park, walking around the neighborhood, at daycare, and going to my mom’s.

We live in a townhouse style condo, so while we do have a large patch of grass she can play on and a deck, we can’t do anything with it. I can’t put up a swing set, and we can’t leave anything on the grass for long periods of time. And we’re out of room on our deck. So as much as I would love to get my daughter a turtle sandbox or a swing set, I can’t. And it frustrates me. I can’t wait to move, but unfortunately that’s a few years away.
