Reasons for failed fertilization during IVF?

Has anyone has been through 
IVF
 and had failed fertilization naturally (not ICSI) where the sperm did not penetrate the eggs at all. Did your Doctor explain what the cause was? We were unexplained  but I think we may have a male factor issue that was missed. SO count is on the lower end but okay and apparently wasn’t an issue. ICSI was not advised. Maybe we have an egg issue too I’m not sure how that works? but my labs and amh were all good, had 25 eggs at retrieval and I’m 29, doctor sees no issue with me. I just can’t believe none fertilized at all.

The chances of failed fertilization with conventional Ivf is actually as high as 15%. It sucks but it does happen. I definitely would do another round and do ICSI. I’m so sorry-that’s devastating :(

It sounds like poor morphology might have been missed.  My husband has 0% morphology as all of his sperm have rounded heads instead of the oval shape needed to penetrate an egg.  ICSI is standard practice at my clinic because of things like this.  It’s not worth the chance that zero fertilize.  The only step from here is to try again with ICSI.

There is failure of sperm to penetrate egg with abnormal head morphology. In this case ivf icsi only choice. Some clinics do rescue ivf isci it is not alwaya successful but it might work. Then there is failure to fertilize normally. Which means the sperm entered but the egg did not develop what is called two polar bodies with the two genetic materials. Sperm with not sound genes might cause this. Immature egg or poor quality eggs can have less than 46 chromosoms or more. If the sperm never penetrated it was not the eggs it was the sperm. 29 eggs is a lot few of them were ought to be chromosomally sound. I cannot believe they wasted that many eggs. Test the sperm morphology. I am surprised they even suggested ivf only if it was poor.

Set up an appointment with your doctor to get more information. I had a cycle where only one egg fertilized (12 retrieved). None of the tests I had done indicated that I might have an egg quality issue. However when we talked to the doctor after my egg retrieval, the doctor said that I had poor egg quality and she said in our case ICIS would not have made a difference. There are a lot of things your doctor may have learned from this cycle, so definitely ask for some time for a sit down to get your questions answered. I am sorry that you had that outcome. I know it sucks. Hopefully, your doctor will have some suggestions for a better outcome next time.

Im not a dr, just talking from experience with friends...Have you been tested for pcos? Thats a lot of eggs to get and one thing that can happen with pcos is to have a very high number of eggs but they aren't mature. My friend had about 20 eggs retrieved and icsi fertilitzation followed by pgs testing. Only 2 were pgs tested normal and she only got 8 that were able to be tested.
