Is this weird? Help settle our argument

My boyfriend just mentioned that a friend of ours was hooking up with a girl that we know, and my boyfriend asked him how the sex was. Is this weird and inappropriate? Or is this “just a guy thing”? I personally think it’s weird but my boyfriend doesn’t see the issue.

I have certain friends we discuss sex openly together. My partner never said so but I’m fairly sure his coworkers have asked him since they were all on him for dating someone younger. I think it’s fairly normal but maybe weird in front of their significant others.
