when did you start buying bits and pieces for your hospital bag?

i’m 20 weeks and not sure if i should just start buying bits and pieces like mini deodorant, maternity underwear and pads etc.

As others mentioned, check and see what your hospital provides. I know when I had my first baby, they gave me pads, underwear, hair ties, water bottle, shower supplies, and non-slip socks. I just needed to bring a few items of clothing. I ended up with an emergency c-section and had to stay for 4 days. I honestly just lived in my robe and a nursing tank with the mesh underwear. 
For baby, I brought a few sleep & play pajamas and a coming home outfit. The hospital provided diapers, wipes, a sleep sack, blanket, pacifier, and hat. They even had onesies for baby to wear if I wanted. 
I would take advantage of everything the hospital will provide for you and baby and save the items you purchase for at home.

I didn’t need pads or underwear because the hospital supplied them. I actually didn’t buy anything because I had travel shampoo and conditioner bottles and just grabbed my toothbrush, deodorant, and brush last minute

Other than snacks, we don’t need to buy anything. It’s pretty much the same as packing to go anywhere for a couple of nights. The hospital has everything for postpartum care that I’ll need. I don’t see the need to buy mini versions of stuff for a hospital trip. I only do that for checking bags on airplanes to keep the weight down.

I’m going to have the bag open and sitting somewhere reachable, from 32 weeks. Stuff I can spare for a few weeks (extra undies, socks, shirts) will go in straight away, and a clear list of what needs to go in will sit in that bag too. I reckon with both of those sorted I could be packed in 5 minutes.
Extra stuff like maternity pads, nappies, baby clothes, will go straight in as I get them too.
I basically want to be ready to pack n’ go by 34 weeks.
