My IUD failed
I’ve had my Skyla IUD for 2.5 years now, was set to have it replaced in January, but I’ve been running into issues the past month. My period in May was unusually short and light, then in June it started on the 7th and literally never stopped. Yesterday what I thought was my period went from spotting/medium flow to breakthrough bleeding with huge clots.
Doctor set me up for a vaginal ultra sound and it showed that my IUD was shifting down, but nothing really to worry about according to the tech. I called my doctor’s office to alert them that my scans were complete and to find out if I could be prescribed something to stop the excessive bleeding. The nurse on-call advised for me to immediately go to the ER. They ran a bunch of tests and I found out, in basically the same breath, that not only am I pregnant, but I’m probably miscarrying.
I have been so strategic and calculated since I switched from the pill to the IUD I never even thought about this possibility. I track my period and fertility in 2 different apps and avoid sex on my most fertile days. My boyfriend and I are monogamous and I trust him (plus we get tested regularly) so we are usually unprotected and pull out, thinking the IUD is backup, but I guess I’m the 1%.
