Texas teacher maternity leave??

Good morning, I am a first time mom to be! I am also a teacher in Texas and just switched districts. I was talking to one of my teacher friends and she mentioned that I won’t be able to sign up for disability insurance since I am pregnant and am moving to a new district this August. With that being said I have 12 total state/local days to use but have no clue what I will do for the rest of my maternity leave. I read that most Texas teachers get their pay docked after they’ve used their days. Does anyone have any suggestions or advice? Thank you!

I’m in Alabama and once I run out of days my FMLA becomes unpaid leave and we get cut our daily rate, since we are contracted employees and we are breaking contract.

Fmla should allow for up to 12 weeks maternity (not paid tho, just guarantees ur job will be there when u return after the 12 weeks are up).Once u run out of fmla time they can dock ur pay for the cost of a sub.

I don’t live in TX but typically you can’t sign up for short term disability once you’re already pregnant so that sounds about right.

I would check with HR. Being a new hire, I would want to double check that they could exclude you from signing up vs just signing up during an open enrollment kind of thing.
I don’t live in TX, but when I did payroll in SC for the state: yes, we would dock your pay if you did not have enough vacation or sick time to cover your FMLA leave as they did not give a maternity/paternity paid leave.
