Childcare cost?

A neighbor asked me to watch her kids in the daytime, for about 9 hours. When I asked her what she thought was fair pay she told me she used to pay her babysitter $30/day, which basically breaks down to $3.75/hr for both kids. I think that's insane so I have no idea how to even respond. Do you think that's fair pay, or is that insane?!

Kind of sound like a rip off. My area it's almost $11 per hour per kid.I used to babysit I was $20 an hour because of the fact is I'm using my time . they were being gone longer than 5 hours I knew I would have to cook two meals and put them to bed. would literally right. Everything that happened the time they left the time they got back. They were gone longer than the time they were supposed to be I would charge them another $15.

That is absolutely not fair pay. It makes me angry that people think it’s reasonable to pay their childcare provider less than minimum wage. Do not work for that. I know prices for childcare vary by state, so try to find out what the going rate is for the area.

I think people often base it off of what a day home would charge...  without keeping in mind they multiple families use the same day home which means the individual makes more than just what 1 family is paying. 
However, that being said, I charge a rate for fun nights out that is much higher than what I have charged for time a parent spends working. Taking into account how much the parent gets paid etc and how many hours total, their home or mine, their food or mine etc. Time kids spend sleeping, how many kids etc. But I wouldnt do a 8 hour day for under $40.

It sounds like she’s asking you to provide in home daycare.  We paid ours $20/ day.  Rates for daycare are way lower than a fair hourly rate.  Find out the average cost of that and go from there.

I paid my mom around $25 a day only for like one hr I got out of work at 4:30 I’d pick up my kid at 5:00-5:30pm

I wouldn’t consider working for less than minimum wage. Especially something as hard as childcare. 
You can let her know I pay $2500/month for one child, in a center where he gets less individualized attention than those kids would with you, and consider it a reasonable rate.

I agree with $10 an hour. Also, would she be packing meals for the kids? Or would you be supplying? Also- activities and such - the last babysitter may have been a family friend or long term connection- not really reasonable to expect someone else to agree to that rate.

I pay 230/week/kid... for my 2 and below and 150/week for my 4 year old.
