I took a class before hand and my lactation consoler was amazing. I personally will always recommend going to at least one class, they show you comfortable ways to hold baby. She also showed “the proper” way to latch baby with minimal pain and discomfort. Breastfeeding never hurt for me and I swear it’s because of her and the techniques she showed me.

Until your nipples get used to it, it will likely hurt.  Many women will get cracked nipples and may even experience bleeding.  Using lanolin nipple butter after every feeding will help.

It does hurt for a little bit even if baby has a perfect latch. Your nipples have to get used to being used. With my first it hurt for a couple weeks. My second it only lasted a couple days. Hot showers and nipple cream helps a lot

I am 3 days pp with #2 and breastfed has hurt both times. I breastfed my daughter for 17 months. Your nipples will probably be tender and it might hurt due to that but that will go away. If you are having pain that curls your toes or brings tears to your eyes than there is an issue with latch. A lactation consultant can help you with all of that! They can show you how to latch and unlatch baby and help you figure out how to keep your nipples and breasts in good condition so you can be successful. I never took a class before baby but had a consult in the hospital and met with them several times after.

No, once you’re nips are cracked it will. Nipple shield saved me! Now he bites even with no teeth and is almost 7 months 😬 idk how much longer I can do this

With my first I only breastfed at the hospital, with my second I really wanted to try it.
In the hospital all was going really well, I absolutely loved it, then I got home and well it started to really really hurt! To the point where I was not excited to feed him and would hold my breath for a few minutes while he latched. 
My nipples bled, there was cracks and scabs. I started using nipple butter after every feed and that cleared up the cracks, I then focused on fixing his latch and every time he latched wrong I would take him off and try again. 
Finally once he was just over a week old it didn’t hurt anymore.
Did I want to quit and go to formula? 
YES! Plenty of times!!
But I stuck to it and I’m so glad I did! 
I’m still exclusively breastfeeding and I absolutely love it. 
Is it hard?
Yes, but in my opinion it’s worth it, the bond is like non other.
Over all do what’s best for you, you will hear horror stories and great stories. You can try it and if you don’t think it’s for you that is okay. If you go straight to formula that’s okay too.
