Do you think growing up poor (lower to lower middle class) helps build character?

Sorry about the length of this post. 😅

I grew up in the lower middle class my entire childhood. We always had enough to get by, but not a lot of extras. Major home repairs weren't an option (our patio roof broke and we couldn't afford to fix it, our basement flooded and we had to pull up the linoleum and couldn't afford to fix it, etc) but we never went without the necessities. Our home was clean and we had plenty to eat, clothing, etc. If we wanted anything extra we had to work for it. I babysat and dogsat for months to save up for my first iPod touch lol. Anyway, my cousin grew up upper middle class. She wasn't rich but always had everything she could possibly want. She's never been a greedy child so she wasn't showered in riches, but I remember she had a phone far before I did, always had the new iPod touch (it was cool when I was that age lol) and always had so many different snacks that we never had (y'all know that's gold when you're a kid). Her house was very tidy and always had new floors, new stairs, new kitchen cabinets, just new remodels and upgrades to her house. My cousin has also never been an incredibly generous person. For example, just little things like never offering to pay for my drink at Starbucks, if I ask for a glass of milk she will (kindly) ask that I not drink too much, etc. I have always seen myself as much more generous. I love buying things for people, feeding them, having them stay at my house, etc. Anyway, all this to say, do you think growing up having less helps build character? More generosity, harder worker, etc? (I understand it's not one-size-fits all though, you can be rich and a great person and poor and a terrible person).
