TW: need advice
I posted as a trigger warning because the situation involves child and animal cruelty /abuse. I love my best friend, I really do, but she has some major issues.
I was recently staying with her while I was getting into a place of my own for me and my cat due to escaping an abusive relationship. I’d never been in her house before and when I came over, I really struggled with being there. She lives with her mom, step dad, and 2 kids (10 & 12). And it wasn’t so much the amount of people but the amount of clutter and mess. I’m talking boards of clothing everywhere. Boards of stuff they should’ve thrown out because they’re not using it anymore. A freezer so packed with food it falls out when you open the door.
Her son wore the same pair of shorts the entire week I was there and no one told him he needed to change them. He showered once during that time too. And the worst part was that they were perfectly fine having company with their house being the way it was and her mom is an alcoholic. She drinks every day. She yells at the children all the time but it’s because my best friend isn’t the one stepping up to the plate to get her children in line. She specifically coddles the 10 year old and he’s still allowed to sleep in bed with her while her 12 old is pretty much ignored and left to feel not wanted.
CPS has visited 5 times the past 3 years. But needless to say they never do anything.
If you want to make matters worse, not only are they hoarders but there are innocent animals in this mess too.
I just about shit myself when she told me she got a kitten.
She has 2 large dogs. One of which is neglected emotionally. One of her dogs is either chained outside all day long to a tree or in a crate all day long. She never gets socialization and neither of the dogs are cared for properly including vaccinations, vet wellness visits, etc. neither of them are spayed or neutered. Then she has a full grown male cat who is outdoor/indoor and he’s not vetted or neutered. They have a turtle too and now another animal that they can’t take proper care of to add to the mix.
My cat and I stayed a week and at the end of the week went to live in our own place. I had to take my cat to the vet because the amount of fleas in their house ate her up so bad her fur began falling apart and she had a bad infection from the bites. I immediately treated her with fleas. Then got her in for bloodwork and antibiotics. I’m a very neat person because that’s the way I was brought up. Everything has its own place. My cat and now kitten are both neutered and spayed and fully vetted. I have an abundance of food and litter for them and they are extremely healthy and well cared for.
I couldn’t take the amount of filth in her home and it was so unbearable that I literally took the first place I could get into.
I know if I were to call CPS they wouldn’t do anything.
Would I be a bad friend to contact animal control about the 5 animals they have?
