Induction for AMA?

Hi ladies,
I’m currently 39 weeks, 3 days pregnant and 38-years-old.  At my appointment today the midwife recommended inducing on my due date due to age-related risks.  She said that past age 35, but especially past 38, there is a risk of demise to the baby because the placenta might stop nourishing the baby.  I hadn’t heard about this before so just wondering if anyone knows research I can check out.  I really didn’t want to induce & want a natural birth, but most importantly I want what’s best for our baby.  Any advice is appreciated 😄

I work in a hospital and see a lot of mommies get induced at 39 weeks. I would follow medical advice just to be on the safe side. Best of luck!

Thanks, ladies!  Fortunately this isn’t a concern for me anymore because I started labor naturally yesterday morning.  Now my concern is how long this is taking....it’s been 17 1/2 hours of early labor at home.  But at least I didn’t have to induce 😬

With my first I was 35, Dr really wanted to induce at 38 or 39 weeks but I was super stubborn and waited till 41 weeks - she is now almost 4 and no problems at all! My second I was due 2 days after turning 38 and again Dr mentioned inducing at 39 but I agreed to induce on due date, well that daughter came naturally two days before due date ON my 38th bday!!! She was breech and they were able to do a version and had natural birth with no problems. I am now pregnant at 39 with my last and I am almost 36 weeks. My Dr hasn't mentioned induction yet but I am so miserable that I am all for it!! Anytime after 37 weeks I would be thrilled for labor induced or natural!! 🥴 No Dr ever gave me a specific reason for early induction, just sited its a good idea with my age. My babies were/are all super active in the womb and if they were to slow down or stop I would be in to see Dr immediately for sure! Do what you feel is best for YOU 😁 I was lucky and had zero health concerns but also honestly feel induction is not all that bad! Good luck!

This is becoming standard practice for AMA. I had my first baby this past winter at age 40 (thank you, IVF!) and my OB practice recommended induction at 39 weeks. My doctor also cited concern regarding the placenta in women over 35. From what she told me, the chances of stillbirth are still very low, but they are higher than for younger women and do go up after the due date.

I had my son at 38 years old, and my OB did keep a lot closer eye on me than when I had my daughter at 35.  He did suggest induction when I was 37.6 weeks because I was dilated to 4 and my BP had elevated a bit.  I went with his advice after talking to a few other people, but I actually went into labor on my own at 38 weeks exactly.  I’m 40 now, and I’ve resigned myself that I’ll probably get induced by 38 weeks this time around.

I just heard this from a friend last week! She’s 39 and just started third trimester but already planned induction at 39 weeks because they told her same thing about placenta. She says she knows someone who was in same position and went past due date and had still birth. I haven’t done research on it but I’ll be turning 38 just before delivering my next so it’s definitely something I’ll be asking my dr about.

I have only heard about this here, and both my kids were born after I was 35. My daughter was just born at 38+3, but I had a c-section scheduled at 40+4 in case she hadn’t come by now. That was a date I chose because I didn’t want to run into September. Im 40 years old and doc didn’t pressure me one way or another, though not sure if she would have advised earlier if I had wanted to go to 42 weeks.
