Why is my doctor not able to tell if my twins are identical or not?

I’m having two twin girls. No doctor has been able to tell me if they are identical or not. Do you wait till birth?

With di/di twins, there’s a 30% chances they’re identical if they’re the same sex. There is a test you can get done during pregnancy but you can also just wait until they’re born to do testing.

If you’re having di/di twins. Then the only way to tell if they’re identical or not is either different blood types at birth (would indicate fraternal twins) or DNA test. My di/di identical twins looked different at birth so I wouldn’t even rely on looks at birth to try and tell if they’re identical or not. But as others have said, about 30% of di/di twins are identical.

Do you know if you have one placenta or two? (Aka babies feeding from same food source) do they have separate sacs/membranes or do they share?
I am having Mono-di identical twin girls￼￼ (mono-di = One placenta two sacs)

If they are di/di twins and the same gender, they won’t know whether identical or fraternal until birth or later. At birth different blood types, or differences in the placentas could rule out identical twins, but if nothing rules it out genetic testing might be necessary to know for sure. (Bec some identical twins don’t look alike at birth)

My sister has didi boys that she tested and are ID. Our didi boys are two years younger. We haven’t tested them yet, but assume they are ID as well because their main physical differences are all environmental.
