Pregnant Teachers?

Question

Any other pregnant teachers here? I’m TERRIFIED of going into labor in front of my students at school, but I’m not willing to compromise my maternity leave by scheduling a day to start it. We just don’t get enough time & I want to spend as much time with baby as I can. If you’ve been in this situation before, I’d love to hear any advice or tips! It’s starting to stress me out a bit and I’m due in just a few weeks.

Very few people go into labor like the movies - with a gush of water breaking. My coworker joked that if her water broke suddenly, it would be the best form of birth control for our students! 😆 I would say work until you go into labor or your dr tells you to stop. I only know one teacher who went on leave early and she regretted it. She went at 39 weeks and then didn’t have the baby until almost 42 weeks. She spent almost 3 weeks of leave just sitting around the house waiting.

My labor started with contractions and then eventually once I dilated more my water broke. I would say just to lookout for contractions that continue to get stronger. I've also heard a lot of women wake up feeling weird so they kind of have an idea that they're going to go into labor.

Yeeeeeesh, I was not expecting criticism with this post. I guess I should clarify that my babies like to come SUPER fast (start to finish is usually about 2 hours), and this is my first baby while being a teacher.... so while I understand that most labors do not start “fast and furious” or with water breaking, it seems like mine notoriously do. I guess I’m just trying to get some advice or reassurance from other *teachers* about what they did when they were in a situation like mine. I’m trying not to permanently scar my students 😂

Labor is very long, especially if it’s your first. Can you possibly start labor in front of your students possibly but it’s not like the baby is gonna just pop out. You need to think about how far the hospital is from your school. Also have a plan with your spouse and your administration incase you do go into labor. If you are due soon it’s reasonable to talk to your admin about the possibility of going into labor. Maybe just plan on leaving the moment you feel that first contraction even if it doesn’t result in actual labor. Also plan to be at work minimally.
