Are you using a pacifier (binky) with your baby?

Question

FTM and have read many conflicting articles on pacifier use. Just trying to get a general consensus as to whether other moms will or won't use one and WHY.

Children have a natural desire to suck. It's a reflex and a very strong one. Some babies will have an urge more than others. My son all but demanded one. We started using it when he was 2 days old and because everyone pressured us to stop we took it away at 12-18 months. I greatly regret it because his urge/reflex to suck was still so strong he started to suck his thumb. Talk about a habit that is hard to break. So far his pediatrician and dentist are not concerned so neither am I. Good luck. Once your LO is here he or she will tell you what they need. :)

I've read that if you're going to breastfeed to not use a pacifier for the first couple of months because it affects the way baby latches on your nipple. So, I figure by that time that baby won't need a pacifier anyways. One less thing to wean baby off of. ☺️

I used one with my first baby until she was two, the doctors told me to stop at age 2. But I really think it affected her speech, she would talk very much cause she had a pacifier in her mouth and now at age 3 has speech issues. I refuse to use one now with this baby! If you're going to use them, I would say to stop using them once they get to an age where they would even try to start talking, which can be as early as 6 months old. Definitely do not go past a year old!!

We were dead against using one with DD but found that she sometimes just needed to suckle to go off to sleep. At first I thought it was hunger so kept feeding her and gave her a belly ache. Sometimes they just need that sucking motion. She never had speech issues and speaks beautifully. She only ever had it for naps and nighttime never hanging out her mouth for no reason during the day. She always knew that was when she had it so never had it during the day. There's a difference between using it to calm your child and a 4 year old trying to speak through one when they're perfectly happy and don't need one!

My mother in law, mom and aunts plus Doctor are all telling me to not use a pacifier. I'll probably still use one from time to time. I didn't use a pacifier when I was young but I sucked my thumb since I was til almost 7th grade.

Some of the things that make me not want to use a pacifier is the fact that my baby could have speech issues. Both my husband and I went to speech specialist when we were kids. I kinda want to avoid that.

I think I will give it a try, but if this second baby is anything like my first, she'll want nothing to do with it...I was the human pacifier for my first, and it wasn't bad. I've heard if they get too attached to their paci, it can be hard to wean them from it.

It will be mostly up to your baby. My daughter took a binky until she was over 2 when we finally broke her of it. My son, on the other hand, never ever wanted a binky despite us offering multiple different brands. The baby I am carrying now is at risk of being preemie so she will likely have a binky because it helps preemies with the suck/swallow reflex.

My son still uses one and he just turned two but only when going to sleep, and he's not reliant on it, I'm taking it away shortly so he doesn't get too jealous of his sister coming that might want to use it. I didn't introduce a pacifier until he started crying for something! That was magic for him to go to sleep without me near him.

We were successful not using it, but it's totally up to you and baby. We tried introducing it with our first but found it difficult to nurse- I think we experienced nipple confusion because we didn't use the right kind for breastfeeding- our boys have all been self soothers so we are pretty lucky.
