For American mommas, did you get an unexpected hospital bill after delivery?

I'm 8 weeks and got a call from the hospital that the total cost for me after insurance is $1800, and that includes prenatal, postnatal, delivery, and physician charges. This seems very low to me, and my insurance website estimates the total cost to be around $5k for this hospital. So I'm wondering if I should expect another bill after delivery for things like an epidural and any medications they administer? What was your experience like?

I called because I didn’t get a bill from the hospital. They told me it was covered 100%. 😳
I had to check to make sure we hadn’t moved to  better country 😂

You often get separate bills for the facility and physicians. And different physician groups may bill separately (anesthesia is commonly billed separately for instance). You may also get a separate bill for fees related to your baby.

It varies insurance to insurance. With my first, I received a desperate bill for the anesthesiologist and epidural, a separate bill for all pregnancy blood work, plus the hospital bill, physicians bill, etc. 
this time, i spoke with the billing office at my doctor’s office, as well as called my insurance company and spoke to them directly. My insurance covers everything (prenatal and postnatal appointments at OB, lab work, anesthesiologist, epidural, etc). The only thing I will have to pay is $1500 out of pocket to the hospital as a copay. We’ve saved up the money over my pregnancy and will just write a check whenever we are admitted and pay it up front. I’d call your insurance company and ask what you should expect!

You might. My hospital bills anesthesia separate so I ended up getting 3 bills for my hospital stay

I got several spectate bill. I would call the hospital back and ask if they have any other bills that are being submitted for your stay. They should be able to tell you what to expect.

I got multiple bills. One for my baby’s hospital stay (about $500), one for my anesthesia (about $1800), one from my doctor ($1600) and one for my hospital stay (about $1200) so around $5,000 total for everything.

I got a bill from the hospital (~$1500) , a bill for anesthesia (~$300) and a bill for the pediatrician that came to check on the baby after she was born (~$200).

Often you get a second bill for epidural and any medications and then a third for all the child related “expenses” of delivery - their care, tests, eye drops etc.

Anesthesia was billed separately, along with pediatrician and the hearing test. I always apply for the hospital’s financial help thing just to see if they can write off a portion of it. It easily ends up being $3,000 after I get all of the separate bills together
