Back tattoo

A tattoo artist drew a really nice full back piece that I'm in love with. I was emailing him about getting it done when my friends and mom looked at his drawing. It's a Japanese style phoenix tattoo and they said since I'm african american it could be offensive if I got that. I don't think it would be. I've always loved japanese style tattoos. Do you guys think it would be offensive?
