Do I need an owlet sock monitor for my newborn?

Question

It’s very expensive for the sock monitor. Baby will be in our room for the first few months in a bassinet, do we need the sock monitor? Do we need a baby monitor right away or when she goes to her nursery?

With baby sleeping in our room we had a vtech video monitor right away but didn't use it until 4 months when we moved her into her crib in her own room.

I never had a monitor for my baby. I don’t think it’s nessicary. Especially if you have a spare phone/device you could use to video call leaving one device in the nursery, the other in your hand. That’s what I did.

Generally if you have a healthy baby, you don’t need the monitor. But It can put a parents mind at ease so sometimes it’s good to have it just for that. We haven’t with any of our kids, they always slept in our room with us the first few months. We didn’t buy a monitor until the baby went to sleep in their own room. :)

I’ve heard mixed things about the owlette monitor anyways. I didn’t use one for either of my kids. I do like my baby monitor though because when I’m in the shower/kitchen/on the patio when baby is sleeping, I can hear her if she needs me.

It’s definitely not a necessity by any means, babies have been doing just fine without them for hundreds of years. But if you want one I’d recommend buying a used one and just replacing the sock part.

The only thing we liked about having a monitor even when she was in our room was that we set it up just to see her so that we could go downstairs and not always be right beside her for those first  weeks before we moved her to her room (we moved her at 2 months and used the monitor there at that point)

We didn't use the owlet with either of our children. Both having reflux, my daughter having silent reflux. They were in our room, literally at arm's length. I didn't feel it was a necessity. We did have a monitor, it was hooked up in their rooms from the time the paint was finished. We didn't use it until they started sleeping in their own rooms though. So I don't think it's something needed ASAP.

You don't need it, but it helps me sleep when the baby is sick, so I can know if he's having trouble breathing
