Do you split half and half with your partner on rent? Despite making different wage?

My significant other brought up the other day how we should get a place in NYC. He said we can find something on the low and split it. $1,000 each. The thing is, he makes 4 times as much as me and I didn’t find how that would even be fair? I called him out on it and said I wouldn’t be able to afford that since I pay my parents biweekly and take care of personal expenses. What do you guys thing? Shouldn’t it be based on what you make? Hell I’d be giving a big portion of my salary while he’d be living the life paying less than 10% of what he makes. It made me a little annoyed that he didn’t consider that.

We don’t “split” anything. We have JOINT bills because we both live in the house and it’s OUR money because we’re a team. The only thing we do when it comes to money is make sure the individual spending is within our budget and run big purchases (more than $100) past the other person before buying. My fiancé makes $1,300 bi weekly and I only make 600-800 bi weekly. We don’t fight about money. 🤷🏼‍♀️

I make twice as much as my husband so I contribute twice as much to the household expenses. Proportionally based on income is the fairest way IMO

With me and my s/o he made three times more so he paid for the mortgage and utilities and I paid for the groceries and gave him $200 to put towards the mortgage. 
But I would definitely tell him if he’s going to tell you he wants to split it 50/50 that rent isn’t going to work for you and you need to lower the budget at least since he’s not taking your lower pay into consideration.

My husband pays the majority of our mortgage but I pay him $300 towards it and our monthly HOA, plus I cover all utilities ( gas, power, wifi, netflix/prime ) he makes 5x what I make so it’s not realistic for us to go 50/50 bc I couldn’t afford to. I have a great job, and I make over $30 an hour, but I only work 8 hrs a week bc of covid. His hours stayed the same and even increased to weekends bc our company needs extra help. When I get full time I will go 50/50 on the mortgage though. I think it’s all about what you can realistically afford month to month without stretching yourself too thin. If someone makes more than the other then it makes sense to me that they cover more if they can.

Yep we split rent even though I make about double what my husband makes. I do cover quite a bit /most of the other household expenses though, so it evens out. You just have to find what works for you both.

Well my fiance is unemployed right now but we usually both put 50% of each pay into a joint account for bills and the mortgage, etc. I make twice the amount of what he usually makes.

I agree with the other comments. By the time you start living together, finances need to become more joint as you are supposed to operate as a unit. You’re not just roommates. I think it’s a little odd that your SO isn’t offering to pay more. He may understand if you have a chat about it. I would also hope if he agrees to pay more that he won’t “keep score” and always remind you how much he’s paying for rent when it comes time to get groceries
