Could you enter a relationship knowing the person has addiction issues?

Question

Whether it is alcohol, drugs, gambling or something else harmful, would you still enter that relationship knowing the full picture?  Does it depend on what the addiction is or the severity of it?

If someone was in recovery and doing well, I’d consider it.  If an addict with no desire to change or who hasn’t hit rock bottom yet, I wouldn’t.

I would proceed with caution. My husband had a huge drinking problem when we first met and it took YEARS for him to get over that and learn to drink in moderation... It was very hard to deal with and if I was older I probably wouldn't have stayed for as long as I did with no change from him. Young and stupid for real.

Yes but my ex was 13 years clean when we met. I've sat in more NA meetings and been to more functions than I can count.

I deal with addicts on both side of my immediate family so that’s a big NO from me. I am so thankful I found a partner who wants no part in any of those things, he barely even drinks.
