Is it neglectful to leave your pet at home alone?

Question

So I have a dog (Cow) was I just got him in august. I adopted him from a rescue. When I first got him I was home all the time but now that I have a new job I’m gone from 2pm -10pm 5-6 days a week. I don’t really go out so I’m home after work unless I go to dinner with a friend but that’s rare. 
I worry that I’m gone too much. He doesn’t display any behavior problems like separation anxiety or loss of appetite. It’s mostly just me being concerned. When I leave either my little brother is home or my nino. Sometimes he’s home by himself all day. But I feel guilty. I was considering using a dog walking service a couple days a week as well. Any advice would be helpful.

That's a pretty common time period for them to be alone. If the dog's not reacting or having accidents, it sounds like they're fine.

No. Most people who have pets also have jobs. As long as the dog has shelter, food, water, toys are a plus, is let out for potty breaks, and is given attention/exercise when you are home... theirs nothing wrong with it! If you can afford a dog walker mid day some days that’s even better. Sounds like you care, and are doing a good job!

I don’t think it’s neglectful at all. The dog is provided for, has shelter, food, water, toys, etc. and you interact with him when you’re home at night. Dogs are social yes but they’re not children, they don’t need supervision or interaction 24/7.

It's not neglectful, but I'd look into either going home for your lunch break or having someone walk him and feed him around dinner time every day. Other than that, mental simulation like treats or his dinner put in puzzle toys can help keep him preoccupied for some of the time you're gone. Just like with humans, it's good for dogs to have time by themselves as long as he doesn't start displaying any separation anxiety issues.

It can be neglectful if let’s say your dog is destructive or anxious/scared when you’re gone, those are signs he needs company and attention. It can be trained away or you could get a second puppy. 
Your puppy might be fine but he might still be lonely without you. A dogsitter would be nice once in a while, if there’s people in the house it should be fine. Reward your puppy for their good behavior when you get home. You’re the #1 one person your dog wants the attention from. Maybe you’re the only one feeling bad, do things that will make you feel better.

I would honestly get a camera system around the house so you can talk to them if you need to. Just let them roam and have access to food and water.

I mean make sure that he gets enough exercise when you are home etc, but that seems like a normal period of time to be alone. Maybe look into another dog if you think your dog would benefit from a companion? Totally just an idea😊

I think it's neglectful to leave them unable to use the bathroom for hours and hours on end
But I don't think it's neglectful to leave them alone for a few hours a day

I don’t think it’s neglectful, but I would totally feel the same way! I have adult dogs and I freak out if they’re home alone for 5-6+ hours. I know they’re fine, but it still bothers me!

It can be if you're out the house for the absolute majority of the day and you're basically isolating your pet but normal work hours, no not neglect. Just put the radio on, make sure the house is warm or cool enough for with enough food and water and you're sorted.
