Naming my son after my dad? Need opinions

My husband and I have been considering naming our son Christopher after my dad. They'd have different last names and my dad has gone by Chris his whole life. 
Would that be sweet or unnecessarily complicated at family gatherings? 😂
Oh, I should also add that if I ever had a brother my dad wanted to name him Christopher Jr. so I think he would be okay with it! But if we choose this name, should we ask him before or surprise him?

I would make it the middle name. I think baby deserves their own name and middle names can be a great way to honor family members.

My boy is named after my dad. We just call my son Baby David or Little David and my dad is David. ❤ My dad was tickled when we told him we were naming my son after him. (I've always been a Daddys Girl so there was no question about what I would name my son)

I am actually named after my mom 
I don’t think I would mind being named after my grandma, but being named after my mom has been super annoying. 
Family gatherings have never been an issue because they call her “Liz” and I’m “baby Liz or “little Lizzy”  
We mainly have issues because we are mother/daughter and it’s been hard getting my stuff separated from hers. For some reason it’s hard for some people to understand the concept that my mom and I have the same first name but different last names, and whenever I ask to get my stuff to be changed from Elizabeth *moms last name* to Elizabeth *my last name* is almost always an ordeal.

Maybe do something like:
Christopher James and call him CJ
Christopher Thomas ( CT)
Or make Christopher the middle name and just surprise him.
