Induction pros and cons?

Trying to decide if I would like to be induced or not and would love to hear anyone’s input and opinions on this!

I was induced with my last. I would rather not it made the contractions way worse I’m sure if I wasn’t induced I could have done it without pain meds. It still took 16hrs from the piticon for me to get to 10 cm.

Induction for moms convenience or doctors convenience (baby not being born in Christmas Day or whatever it may be) ￼does more harm than good. It can lead to more interventions than if you went into spontaneous labor.

However, if induction is being done for a medical reason - like preeclampsia - it’s definitely preferable for the health of the baby.

I've done both ways, and depending on your pain tolerance natural is hard but not killer. I went natural with and without pitocin. But I also have had the epidural with being induced. Natural with pitocin is alot harder but manageable its so cliche but focus on your breathing really helps. I went in at 2cm but my water broke and labor stopped so they started pitocin and I did it all natural. The time I went natural without pitocin, I didn't know I was in active later til I got to the hospital was 8cm and had her 20 minutes later water broke naturally with her. My epidural babies only reason I did epidural is because I was induced with one and didn't sleep the whole night before because I was so excited, my second epidural I chose to do as well because my body had history of stalling labor and I didnt want to be sent home again and my induction was a week away anyways. My hospital sent me home the time before that at 5cm dilated at like 36 weeks and I was so scared to have him at home. So my last when I was in active labor the second they offered the epidural I agreed cause then there was no turning back. Which I'm glad I did because my labor stalled out an hour before I got my epidural.

Induction may lead to more medical intervention than when starting labour spontaneously. I would only go for induction if medically recommended, and even then I would be carefully weighing up pros and cons before accepting. I had an induction due to high BP with my daughter, and hoping for a spontaneous labour with my second baby this time.

I’d read the book Expecting Better By Emily Oster. She breaks down the research on outcomes of induction really well. Personally, after hearing my friends induction stories, I wouldn’t chose it if I didn’t have to.

I think it was great, I had an appointment and knew when I would go in. It wasn’t too long at all and I didn’t have any crazy pain until transition so I got epidural, was already 7cm and then an hour or two later and I was pushing! Only 15 minutes and I met my baby girl. Would prefer to be induced again

I’ve been induced with both my previous children. The first was due to BP rising and protein in urine so I there was risk of preeclampsia. I was 37+5 and 2cm dilated at the time. From start of Pitocin to delivery was 8 hours and I only “pushed” for 15 min. With my daughter, it was because her fluid levels were really low- induced at 38+5, was 2 cm dilated, and start to finish was 7 hours with barely two “big pushes”. I do believe that your body needs to be ready for induction to work as intended. Both times,y body responded really well to the Pitocin and delivery was smooth. I currently have GD and have a scheduled induction for 39+2. That may get pushed up if I can’t get my fasting sugars under control in the next two weeks (already on metformin) which I would be fine with.

I was induced with my son in 2019 due to medical reasons. I’m being induced at 39 weeks this time because I want to be. It’s just easier on everyone involved. My doctor says I’m a strong candidate for elective inductions to go successfully needing intervention based on my history as well as how my pregnancy has been going.  My induction with my son was long but it wasn’t horrible. I was 1cm dilated and 80% effaced when I went in so the process was easier than had I not been dilated at all.
