For college- do you recommend living in a dorm or off campus?

Why? I’m trying to weigh the pros and cons before I transfer to my 4 year university. Does it end up being cheaper to live off campus?

I went to a community college for 3 years that had no on campus living. I lived at home for half that then moved to an apartment close by. I could walk to school which was really nice. The four year college I transferred to, I rented an apartment (not in a complex) with my boyfriend which was 15 minutes from campus. We paid $425 a month for 2 bedrooms, 1 bath. Utilities were probably around $100-$200 (not including internet) depending on the time of year. The year I graduated, the new dorms on campus were charging around $1500 a month. Granted that included food, laundry machines and you shared the dorm with 3 to 4 people. Of course it depends on where you choose to go to school. Where I went, it saved me a ton of money to live off campus, plus I had more freedom and privacy.

It depends on the school. I know some schools you may start in dorms then the next year live off-campus. My school, people generally stayed in dorms all 4 years and it was great, less expensive and more convenient than living off campus. It depends on the area, campus and culture!

A dorm is good the first year because then you can really find a sense of community and make some friends. I lived on campus my first year and now I live in an off-campus apartment and still have some friends from my residence hall. I had a great time. I lived in a triple room connected to a double and all five of us shared a bathroom without any issues. It all comes down to teamwork and boundaries. Hope this helps!

My friend lived on a campus for about 4 weeks until they got kicked out because of covet. and she doesn't get any of the money back for the dorm. So to prevent the possibility of getting kicked it's better to get apartment that way you are safe.

I think it depends on what you're expecting out of it. I never went to college but my mom lived in the school dorms and she said it was horrible because people were loud all the time, there was never a quiet moment to study, etc. She stayed for one semester then went home.

I liked living in the dorms for the first two years for the social aspect. It was the best way to meet people.
