Nipple Shield

Is anyone else using a nipple shield and if so, how/when do you plan on weaning? My little 34weeker is now 6 weeks old. I started using it because his suck/latch wasn't the greatest but now I'm having a hard time not using it. We have seen a lactation consultant and she got him to latch no problem (of course) but I'm having issues (and tons of pain) when I try it on my own. He eats like a champ with the shield. I just find it so cumbersome to put in place and he often pulls it off when we are getting started. I can't imagine the struggle of it in public. Any tips?
